Your Guide to Applying for a Barko Loan In-Branch or Online
Insights, advice, and stories from Barko.
Whether you apply for an online loan or walk into a branch, Barko makes both options simple and easy for you. This guide covers what to expect at each step, which documents you need, and how to move your application forward as quickly as possible.
Two ways to apply
Whether you are a new or existing customer, Barko offers two easy ways you can start your loan application. You can visit any Barko branch in person, or you can start your loan application online by going to www.barko.co.za. Both options lead to the same fast, transparent process. Coming soon: a full end-to-end online service for all clients.
What documents do you need?
Whether you apply in-branch or online, you will need the following to establish a business relationship:
- A valid South African ID (smart ID card, front and back) card or passport.
- Your latest three months’ bank statement and payslip if available.
- Your cell phone to approve the DebiCheck mandate.
Your bank statements do double duty:
- They confirm your source of income for the affordability assessment and
- Your residential address for identity verification.
Note: If you are not registered for online banking or do not have a banking app, you will need your bank card to apply at a Barko branch. You will not be able to apply online if you are not registered for online banking or do not have a banking app.
How the process works
Once you submit your online loan application or hand in your documents at a branch, Barko:
- Verifies and captures your personal information, income, expenses, current active debt and employment.
- Runs a mandatory credit check with a registered credit bureau. This is required for every application under the National Credit Act (NCA).
- Completes a full affordability assessment in line with the NCA, so that any loan you receive is one you can afford to repay.
If approved, most clients receive a same-day loan payout via EFT within minutes. The process is designed to be fast, clear and hassle-free.
Why do we ask for your information?
As part of the law, we are required to:
- Identify and verify every client under the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA). Your ID and bank statements let us confirm who you are and where you live.
- Keep proper records of your application and the documents you provide, as required by both FICA and the NCA.
These are legal requirements that apply to every credit provider in South Africa, and they protect both you and Barko.
Your information is protected
Barko takes data privacy seriously. All personal information you submit is protected under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), stored securely, and used only for your loan application and to meet our legal obligations. Your information stays secure with us, and you can apply with confidence.
